Adrienne Rich, born on May 16, 1929 in Baltimore, Maryland, was a journalist, poet, and scholar. Rich's inspiration came from the women's movement and a lesbian/feminist aesthetic. She was born from a doctor and a concert pianist. She was greatly encouraged by her father to write poetry. She graduated from Radcliffe College in 1951 with a degree in English. During the year 1952, Rich got married to a professor by the name of Alfred Conrad. They later then started a family with three boys. Due to Rich's involvement in her works and her activism, she was always encouraged to balance out social norms between men and women. She was also active in the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement.
In the year 1970, rich became alienated by her husband therefore she left him. Later on in the year, he committed suicide. Although she was saddened she continued to commit herself to social activism. Later on that year she won the national Book Award. Around 1976, rich came out a as a lesbian. She then got involved with writer, Michelle Cliff and they were together for the rest of her life.
Adrienne Rich passed away on March 27, 2012 due to her rheumatoid arthritis, which she had battled all throughout life. She was 82 years old when she passed away in Santa Cruz California.
